Firearms  -  NSW Policy

What We Believe

The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party asserts the right of law abiding citizens to own and use firearms. We recognise the cultural and economic significance of recreational shooting and hunting. The regulation of firearms should not unduly impede on a law abiding citizens pursuit of his or her freedoms.

With Government opting for good headlines over good policy, Australia’s law abiding firearm community have been burdened with increasingly oppressive regulation while gun crime, particularly in inner city areas, has continued unaffected by new or existing legislation. Gun control is not about guns, it’s about control and an ever growing restriction of individual liberties.

Our firearms policy is based around one central theme: Criminals DO NOT obey the law!
With this in mind the Shooters and Fishers Party will call on all levels of Government to work with law abiding firearms owners to develop truly effective laws that do not unduly burden the hundreds of thousands of Australians who use firearms safely and responsibly.

Law abiding shooters and hunters should not have to bear the brunt of poorly considered and illogical responses to criminal actions. The Shooters and Fishers Party has a strong record in supporting a balanced and responsible approach to target shooting and hunting in NSW.

Our Action Plan

Supporting all law abiding firearms owners regardless of their chosen discipline or shooting interests.
Whether you’re a hunter, target shooter, or pistol enthusiast, the Shooters and Fishers Party will campaign for the rights of ALL firearms owners.

Repealing the 1996 National Firearms Agreement
The NFA has failed to increase public safety and not had any notable effect on reducing gun crime. Howard’s draconian gun laws only served to undermine law abiding firearms owners and treat them like criminals in waiting.

TOUGH and SMART on gun crime
Criminals who use a gun in the commission of an offence need to know that they WILL go to jail, not may, not perhaps, they WILL go to jail for their crime. That is why the Shooters and Fishers Party will immediately introduce a bill for mandatory sentencing of criminals who use a firearm in the commission of an offence. We will also call for further measures to address illegal firearms trading in the community.

Re-open National Parks and State Forests to licensed hunters
Recreational hunting is a legitimate and culturally significant activity offering huge conservation and environmental benefits to our public land. We will continue to support and promote hunting opportunities across NSW.

Family and home protection
Shooters Party founder, The Hon. John Tingle, passed the Home Invasion (Occupants Protection) Bill which guaranteed in law the right of a person to protect their family and property against intruders. We will continue this good work by seeking to establish the genuine reason of family and home protection for lawful possession of a firearm. We support your right to protect your home and family.

The end of the ‘Ammo Bill’
In 2012 the Liberal/National Government, with support from the extreme Greens passed the Ammo Bill as a way to reduce gun crime in NSW. The Ammo Bill has FAILED! Instead, it has placed yet another regulatory burden over law abiding firearms owners and dealers while doing nothing to stop gun crime. We will immediately introduce legislation to repeal the entire Bill.

Abolishing the registration of Category A and B firearms with savings to be reinvested into front line crime prevention strategies
Hundreds of millions of dollars are wasted on registration of firearms, which has failed to promote responsible attitudes or stop unlicensed people from gaining access to guns. This money can be better spent on the heart of the issue – crime prevention.

Deregulating paintball markers and air rifles
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party view the current requirements to register paintball markers and air rifles is just bureaucratic non-sense and ‘nanny-state’ ideology. We will work to remove these requirements to restore some common sense.

Expand public land hunting programs and opportunities across NSW
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party will work to provide greater hunting opportunities for licensed hunters in NSW, including the introduction of a fox and wild dog bounty and expanding all pest and feral animal control programs. We will continue to support and promote hunting tourism industries, including private game reserves.

Educating and providing practical firearms experience to young people
Safe and responsible use of firearms must be taught from young age. The Shooters and Fishers Party will commit to introducing firearms safety training and practical range experience as an approved school elective subject. We will also call for the introduction of a TAFE endorsed gunsmith course. We will continue to lobby the Office of Sport and Recreation to provide funds and support for recreational shooting and hunting.

Establish new firearms ranges and facilities
We will continue to support the establishment of more ranges and facilities throughout NSW for shooters, with an emphasis on increasing disabled access and regional shooting complexes.

Safe Shooting Grants program (MASOSC)
We will continue to broaden the successful Safe Shooting Grants program (MASOSC), delivering more funding to shooting and hunting clubs across the state. To date, the Safe Shooting Grants program has delivered millions of dollars to shooting and hunting clubs throughout NSW.

De-regulate sound moderators
Remove restrictions on the lawful possession, ownership and use of sound moderators incorrectly referred to as “silencers” by licensed shooters.

Recognise our defence personnel
Introduce laws and exemptions for past or serving defence force personnel, to grant licenses and registration of firearms free of any fees.

What This Means For You

The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party will not accept ANY further restrictions on the rights of law abiding firearm owners. This is not a time for shooters and hunters to roll over, rather it is a time to stand up and be counted, regardless of their chosen discipline, competition, age, gender or ability. The fight for reasonable firearms laws can be won, and we will lead the way!

We will work to ensure the survival and advancement of target shooting and hunting across NSW. The fight for reasonable firearms laws will be generational, and we want to ensure that the each generation can enjoy safe and responsible firearms use.

Recognising that some laws in regards to firearms are necessary, we will work to balance those laws with rights of law abiding firearms owners. We will campaign for harsher penalties for those involved in gun crime, including mandatory sentences.

We will continue to promote the great work being performed by shooting and hunting clubs across the country as well as those individual members who represent our clubs, state and country with such distinction at national and international competitions.

The Liberal/National Coalition, Labor, and the Greens have all shown they cannot be trusted when it comes to shooters and hunters rights. That is why the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party that will continue to protect your freedoms!
